OMTech K40+ Review: The $700 CO2 Laser That Actually Cuts

You’ve been there. You drop $400 on a diode laser because every YouTube video swears it’ll cut 1/4” plywood. Then you wait forty minutes for a simple engraving and watch the damn thing smoke a line through the wood like it’s drawing with a crayon held by a toddler. The cut quality is garbage. The burn marks are everywhere. You spend more time fiddling with focus than actually making stuff.

That’s exactly where I was three months ago. My little diode machine sat in the corner collecting sawdust, and every project I started turned into a frustrating exercise in patience. So when I finally got fed up and made the jump to a real CO2 laser, I went with the OMTech K40+. Not because it’s the most expensive option. Not because it’s the prettiest. My old diode laser couldn’t even scorch a consistent line on basswood without leaving a charred mess. The K40+ changed everything about how I work.

First Impressions and Unboxing

The box showed up and I’ll be honest, I was nervous. The K40 line has a reputation — some of it earned — for being a budget machine that requires tinkering. The original K40s shipped with sketchy wiring, questionable grounding, and a control panel that looked like it came from a 1990s vending machine. I’ve heard horror stories from friends who bought the bare-bones version on AliExpress and spent their first week rewiring the damn thing before they could even fire the tube.

Inside I found the laser, a separate power supply, the exhaust hose, a small air pump for the air assist, and a surprisingly decent manual.

Assembly took about thirty minutes. The machine arrives mostly together — the gantry is pre-installed, the bed is in place, and you’re mostly attaching the exhaust, plugging in the cables, and doing a safety check. The Work Area and the Bed

The K40+ gives you a 12” × 8” work area. That’s smaller than I’d like, but it’s the reality of a desktop CO2 laser at this price. You’re not cutting full sheets of plywood here. You’re making signs, small boxes, custom gifts, engraving tumblers, cutting acrylic for craft projects. If you need bigger, you’re looking at the Aliencell X1 or a Thunder Laser — both cost a hell of a lot more.

What matters is what OMTech did with that space. The bed is a honeycomb style that sits on adjustable Z-axis screws. You can move the bed up and down to accommodate thicker materials or to adjust your focal length. It’s a manual adjustment — you’re turning threaded rods by hand — but it works and it’s precise enough for this class of machine.

The stock bed is fine for most work. I added a rotary attachment later for engraving tumblers and bottles, and that’s been a game-changer for my Etsy side hustle. But out of the box, the flat bed handles flat material beautifully. The honeycomb supports the work piece and lets the laser pass through cleanly, which means you get less char on the bottom of your cuts.

One thing I noticed immediately: the alignment is actually decent. The mirrors came properly tuned from the factory. I’ve read complaints from other buyers about needing to re-align the optics immediately, but mine was cutting clean lines within the first hour. Your mileage may vary, but OMTech seems to have tightened up their QC on the K40+.

The 45W Tube and What It Actually Does

Here’s where marketing meets reality. The “45W” rating refers to the peak power of the CO2 tube. The actual output you’ll get at the work piece is more like 35-40W after losses through the mirrors and lens. That’s still a massive step up from any diode laser you’re used to.

What does that mean in practice?

I cut 3mm birch ply at 12mm/s with a single pass. Clean edges, minimal char, no smoke damage on the top surface. The same material took my old diode laser four passes and still looked like a raccoon got at it.

6mm acrylic cuts in two passes at moderate speed. The edges come out flame-polished, which means they’re clear and smooth without any additional sanding. That’s something diode lasers simply cannot do — they melt acrylic into a frosted mess, but CO2 vaporizes it cleanly.

Hardwoods like oak and walnut engrave beautifully. I’ve found my sweet spot around 150mm/s at 15% power for deep, dark engravings on maple. The contrast is stunning — dark brown to nearly black marks on light wood with crisp detail.

Glass engraving works too, but it’s a different beast. You’re not cutting glass, just surface-etching it. The trick is to coat the glass with a layer of dish soap or use transfer paper to prevent micro-cracking. The K40+ handles it well at low power and decent speed. The one thing I haven’t pushed it through yet is thick hardwood. 1/2” oak is technically possible but it takes multiple passes and the edges get pretty charred. If you’re doing that regularly, you need a 60W or larger machine. For a desktop unit, the K40+ has a reasonable ceiling, and honestly, most people buying this aren’t trying to cut construction lumber.

The Adjustable Head

The K40+ has a new adjustable head assembly that OMTech added to differentiate it from the older models. The lens tube has a threaded collar that lets you fine-tune the focal point without having to disassemble anything. That’s a small thing until you need it, and then it’s everything.

Here’s the scenario: you’re engraving a thicker piece of wood, say 12mm walnut. The standard focal length is set for engraving flat surfaces, but you need the focus to sit at the right depth for deep engraving. With the adjustable head, I just loosen the collar, turn it a few millimeters, and re-tighten. Two minutes, done. On the old K40s, you’d be shimming the lens tube or messing with the bed height to compensate.

I also swapped in a different focal length lens for cutting (2” instead of the stock 1.5”) and the adjustable head made that swap painless. It’s a feature I didn’t think I’d care about, but now I use it constantly.

Air Assist — Not a Gimmick

The built-in air assist is one of those features that sounds like marketing fluff until you use a laser without it. The air pump blows a steady stream of compressed air onto the cut area, which does two things: it clears smoke and debris from the cut path, and it cools the material surface. The result is cleaner cuts, less charring, and fewer flame-ups on flammable materials.

I ran the first few cuts without air assist just to see the difference. The difference is night and day. Without air, you get inconsistent cuts, more smoke marks, and the occasional flare-up on wood with higher resin content. With air assist on, the cuts are uniform and the edges stay clean.

The included pump is a small diaphragm unit that sits on the floor. It’s not super powerful — you’re not blowing a tornado across your work piece — but it’s enough for a desktop machine. I’ve seen people upgrade to a bigger aquarium pump with a flow control valve, and I’ll probably do that eventually, but the stock pump does the job.

The K40+ claims up to 300mm/s. That’s the max speed for engraving — you’ll rarely run that fast for cutting. My typical engraving speeds are 100-200mm/s depending on the material and the depth I want. Cutting speeds are much slower, usually 8-15mm/s for wood and acrylic.

The machine runs on the standard K40 ecosystem of software. Out of the box, it ships with LaserDraw, which is a clunky piece of freeware that does the job but feels like it was designed in 2005. I immediately switched to K40 Whisperer, which is a much better open-source option. But if you want the real deal, you’re going to want LightBurn.

LightBurn is a $60 license, and it’s worth every penny. It’s the difference between fighting your machine and actually using it. The interface is intuitive, the import options are solid, and the control it gives you over power, speed, and passes is essential for getting consistent results. I’m convinced half the people who complain about K40 quality are using the stock software and have no idea what their machine is capable of.

If you’re coming from a diode laser that works with LightBurn out of the box, you’ll feel right at home. The K40+ works flawlessly with it. Set your power curve, import your SVG, hit start. That’s it.

The Exhaust and Safety Stuff

Here’s the part nobody talks about in the YouTube reviews. A CO2 laser produces actual smoke and fumes. My diode laser would smolder wood and produce a little smoke, but this thing vaporizes material. You need an exhaust system that vents outside. The K40+ has a built-in exhaust fan that’s adequate for a home workshop, but it’s not going to handle heavy production. I vent mine out a window through the included hose, and it works fine.

The machine also has safety interlocks on the lid — it won’t fire with the lid open. That’s a welcome upgrade from the old K40s where you could essentially run it as an open-air laser if you bypassed the switches. I’m not going to lie and say I never ran mine with the lid cracked to watch the action, but the interlock makes it safe enough to leave running while I do other things.

You should still absolutely vent this thing outside and use it in a ventilated space. The smoke from cutting acrylic is genuinely nasty. Do not cheap out on ventilation. This is not optional.

What’s Not Great

Time for the honest drawbacks. Nothing is perfect, and the K40+ has some warts.

The included exhaust fan is underpowered for extended cutting sessions. After about an hour of continuous cutting, I notice smoke starting to linger in the enclosure. I solved this with a cheap inline duct fan I added to the exhaust line. It’s a $30 fix that makes a huge difference.

The stock lens is… fine. It works, but it’s not great. After a few weeks, I noticed my cuts getting inconsistent. I swapped in a better quality lens from a third-party supplier and the difference was immediate. Cleaner cuts, better focus, more consistent power delivery. Consider this a planned upgrade.

The water cooling system uses a small aquarium pump and a reservoir. It works, but you need to keep an eye on it. The pump isn’t powerful enough for sustained high-power cutting, and if you’re running at 80% power for more than a few minutes, the tube can overheat. I’ve mitigated this with a larger reservoir and frozen water bottles to keep the temp down during long sessions. It’s a workaround, not a solution.

The passthrough slot on the side is a nice idea but poorly executed. It’s designed to let you feed longer pieces through, but the opening height is too small for anything thicker than about 1/4”. I’ve used it a few times for engraving long boards, but it’s more hassle than it’s worth. I just cut my material down to size first.

The control panel is basic. You get a small LCD, a few buttons, and that’s it. No USB stick support like some of the more expensive Chinese lasers have. You’re tethered to your computer via USB cable. That’s fine for most people, but it’s worth knowing.

The OMTech K40+ is not for everyone. If you’re just doing occasional hobby engraving on small items, a diode laser like the xTool M2 might be enough. It’s cheaper, safer, and easier to use. But if you’re hitting the limits of diode power — trying to cut thicker materials, working with acrylic, or just tired of waiting thirty minutes for a mediocre engraving — this machine is your entry point into real laser cutting.

It’s also a solid choice if you’re starting a small business. I’ve been running mine for about three months now, making custom signs and engraved gifts. The machine has already paid for itself. The quality is good enough to sell, the speed is fast enough to produce, and the price means you’re not underwater waiting for ROI.

If you need something bigger, save up for a more serious machine like the Aliencell X1 or step up to a Thunder Laser system. But those are $2,000+ investments. The K40+ at $699.99 gets you 80% of the capability at a third of the price.

The Verdict

Is the OMTech K40+ a perfect machine? No. The exhaust fan could be stronger, the stock lens deserves an upgrade, and the software situation requires you to buy LightBurn to get real results. But for $699.99, this is the best way into CO2 laser cutting I’ve found.

It’s a real laser cutter. It cuts wood, acrylic, and engraves glass with results that look professional. It’s fast enough to run a small business. It’s adjustable enough to handle different materials and thicknesses. And it’s safe enough to run in a home workshop without feeling like you’re going to burn the house down.
