This 10W Laser Engraver Made Me Ditch My Cricut for Good

I burned through three cheap diode lasers before I learned my lesson. Leather: Vegetable-tanned leather engraves beautifully. The M3 leaves a clean, dark mark that doesn’t wipe off or smear. I’ve made dozens of custom dog collars and keychains. The smell is… distinctive. Like burnt popcorn mixed with a campfire. You’ll want that exhaust running.

Glass: This surprised me. Etching glass with a diode laser requires coating the surface with something like dry erase marker or special spray, then the laser burns through the coating to etch the glass underneath. The M3 handles this well — I’ve made custom beer mugs and wine glasses with detailed logos that came out frosted and permanent. Not as deep as a rotary engraver, but for gifts and personalization, it’s perfect.

Metal: This is where you need to manage expectations. Marking metal requires the same coating trick as glass, and you get a dark annealing mark rather than a deep engraving. It works on stainless steel and aluminum, but don’t expect to engrave knife blades in a single pass. For marking tools, tags, and metal business cards, it’s fine. For industrial-grade engraving, buy a fiber laser. The M3 isn’t that, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

The 10W output is the sweet spot for beginners. Anything less and you’ll be frustrated by slow speeds and shallow cuts. Anything more (like the 20W+ monsters) adds cost and complexity without proportional benefits for most hobby work. The M3 hits the balance right.


Software and Setup: The Part That Usually Sucks

Most laser engraver software feels like it was designed by engineers who hate users. The M3 comes with LaserGRBL and LightBurn compatibility. LaserGRBL is free and works fine for basic tasks, but you’ll want LightBurn eventually. It’s worth the $60 for the extra control and features.

The M3 connects via USB and shows up as a standard serial device. No proprietary driver headaches, no finicky WiFi setup that drops connection mid-job. I’ve had lasers that refused to connect after every firmware update. The M3 connects every time, and the connection stays stable during long engraving jobs.

Setup takes about fifteen minutes. You align the laser, focus it using the included focus tool (a simple acrylic gauge that ensures the right distance), and run a test engraving. The included sample files help you calibrate speed and power settings for different materials.

The one gripe I have: the included software tutorials are sparse. You’ll be watching YouTube videos to learn LightBurn’s finer points. But that’s a software problem, not an M3 problem. And honestly, learning LightBurn is a skill that transfers to any laser you’ll buy later.


The Enclosure and Safety Features: Not Just Marketing

I’ve run lasers bare before. The blue light is bright enough to mess with your eyes even with goggles, and the smell of burning wood gets everywhere. The M3’s enclosure changes the experience completely.

The Class 1 certification means the enclosed unit is safe to operate without additional eye protection — the interlocked lid and laser-safe viewing window handle that. You can watch your engraving progress through the orange-tinted window without frying your retinas. That’s not just convenience; it’s actual safety for those of us who’d forget to put on goggles in the middle of a long project.

The honeycomb workbed is a decent size for a desktop unit. I’ve fit cutting boards up to about 11 inches square, and it handles cylindrical objects with the included rotary attachment. Wait — the rotary attachment is sold separately. That’s my first real complaint. For the price point, including a basic rotary would have been nice. If you plan to engrave glasses or mugs, budget another $60-80 for the accessory.

The enclosure also has a built-in air assist port. Air assist blows compressed air at the cutting point to reduce charring and keep the lens clean. You’ll want a small aquarium pump or dedicated air compressor for cleaner cuts on thicker materials. The M3 doesn’t include one, which is annoying, but the port is there and ready.


Real World Performance and Settings

These are my tested settings after three months of trial and error:

Basswood (3mm): 300mm/min speed, 80% power, single pass for clean cuts. Slower speeds (200mm/min) with 70% power gives you cleaner edges with less char for detailed work.

Plywood (5mm): 200mm/min, 100% power, two to three passes. The laser cuts through but leaves a slight taper on the edges. Acceptable for most projects.

Leather (2-3mm): 1000mm/min, 40% power for engraving. Fast and clean. For cutting, drop to 300mm/min at 70% power.

Glass: 800mm/min, 60% power, with a coating of dry erase marker. Let it dry completely before starting.

Stainless Steel: 200mm/min, 80% power, with thermal marking paste. You’ll get a dark, permanent mark.

The 0.01mm precision claim is close to accurate. Fine details and small text (down to about 1mm) come out readable and clean. I’ve done engraved rulers with millimeter markings that are actually legible. The laser spot size is small enough for detailed work without the charred edges I saw on cheaper units.

One thing I noticed: the M3 handles gradient engraving well. Grayscale images and photos come out with decent tonal range if you use the dithering settings in LightBurn properly. It’s not as good as a CO2 laser for photo engraving, but for a 10W diode, it’s better than expected.


What It’s Not Good At (Honest Talk)

I’m not here to sell you a fantasy. The M3 has limitations, and you should know them before buying.

Speed: It’s not fast. Large engravings take time. A full 8x10 inch photo engraving takes about 45 minutes at quality settings. You can speed it up with draft mode, but you’ll lose detail. This is a patience machine.

Thick materials: Cutting anything over 6-8mm of wood is a struggle. You can do multiple slow passes, but the edges get charred and it’s easy to misalign if the material shifts. Fumes: Even with the exhaust fan, some materials smell terrible. Acrylic and PVC are no-gos — they produce toxic fumes that the basic exhaust won’t fully handle. Stick to wood, leather, and coated metal. The M3’s manual warns against certain materials, and unlike many of us who ignore manufacturer warnings, you should actually listen here.

Software learning curve: While LightBurn is powerful, it’s not intuitive. There’s a real learning curve to mastering material settings, dithering options, and speed/power tradeoffs. Plan on burning through some scrap wood while you learn. I probably wasted 30 sheets of 3mm plywood before I got my settings dialed in. Comparisons: How It Stacks Up Against the Competition

I’ve used several lasers in this category, and the M3 holds its own.

The xTool M2 has a built-in camera and slightly better software integration, but it costs significantly more and the camera isn’t worth the premium unless you need perfect alignment on every project. The M3 doesn’t have a camera — you’ll be aligning by hand or using LightBurn’s framing function. For most projects, that’s fine. For exact placement on pre-printed materials, the camera would help. I can’t say I miss it enough to pay an extra $200.

The Gweike and Atomstack units in the same price range feel cheaper. The frame on the M3 is more rigid, which directly translates to cleaner cuts and fewer focus issues mid-job. The M3’s enclosure is also substantially better than the zip-up fabric tents some brands sell as enclosures.

The M3’s one real weakness compared to pricier units is the lack of a camera and the absence of a built-in air assist pump. Both are add-ons you can purchase separately, and both are nice-to-have rather than essential. For the price, I’d rather have the solid frame and good enclosure than those features.


Build Quality and Longevity

Three months of regular use, and the M3 shows no signs of wear. The rails are still smooth, the belt tension hasn’t loosened, and the laser diode is still outputting at consistent power. I’ve run it for hours at a time on complex projects without overheating or losing calibration.

The honeycomb bed holds up well. Spilled glue, burned wood residue, and stray laser hits haven’t warped it. I’ve seen cheaper honeycomb beds bend and sag under repeated use. Not this one.

One small issue: the included exhaust hose is a bit short and the fan is louder than I’d like. It’s not unbearably loud, but you won’t be running this in an apartment without neighbors hearing it. If noise matters to you, you’ll want to upgrade the exhaust setup. The fan does its job, but it’s not silent.


Who Should Buy This (And Who Shouldn’t)

Buy it if: You’re new to laser engraving and want a machine that works out of the box without a frustrating setup process. You want to engrave wood, leather, glass, and coated metal for gifts or a small side business. You value safety features and don’t want to mess with DIY enclosures and goggles. You’re willing to learn LightBurn and spend time dialing in settings.

Don’t buy it if: You need to cut thick materials regularly. You’re engraving bare metal (you need a fiber laser). You need massive work area for large projects. You’re not willing to deal with the learning curve and expect perfect results on your first try. You’re buying this for a child as a toy — this is a tool, not a toy.
