- It sands beautifully. Edges come out looking intentional instead of torched.
- It holds detail. Fine lettering, tight inlays, hinges — it just works.
The catch? It’s not cheap, and supply is weird. You’ll find 12x12 sheets everywhere and 12x24 sheets nowhere. Buy in bulk when you find a supplier you trust, because the good stuff sells out fast.
One more thing: real Baltic birch has consistent thickness. Cheap “birch plywood” from a craft store can vary by half a millimeter across a single sheet, which ruins any project where parts need to interlock. If you’re building boxes or anything with tabs, this matters more than you think.
MDF: The One People Either Love Or Despise
Medium-density fiberboard cuts like butter. Smooth, uniform, no grain to fight against. For engraved signs and flat decorative pieces, it’s honestly fantastic.
But here’s where I’ll be honest with you: MDF is glue and sawdust pressed into a sheet. That means fumes. Real fumes. Pressure-treated lumber. The chemicals are toxic when burned. Full stop. Don’t do it.

Online. Widest selection, consistently good quality from reputable sellers, and you can order exactly the size and thickness you need. This is where I buy 90% of my wood now.
